Gymnastics Cake!

Gymnastics Cake!, originally uploaded by bakers-cakes.

I loved making this adorable pink cake! The cake design is based on an invitation from Swoozies, a fantastic stationary store. The cake is Fresh Strawberry Buttermilk Cake with pink Vanilla Buttercream and is topped with pink vanilla rolled fondant. The gymnast on the cake is illustrated with edible marker on white fondant and drawn to resemble the birthday girl!

Viola Cake

Viola Cake, originally uploaded by bakers-cakes.

It's must be fate that brought this Viola Cake order to me this week. As a middle school (and elementary and high school orchestra alum) I was able to channel my own middle school orchestra concert experience into creating this Viola Cake! I envisioned the hours spent in the orchestra room that had the vague smell of spit, (I think the trombone guys emptied their excess drool onto the floor) and our sometimes off key and tempo attempts at the classical masterpieces. Yup, I was a dork. Still am.

The cake is Vanilla Buttermilk with Double Chocolate Cream Cheese Buttercream Frosting, topped with Light Chocolate Rolled Fondant.

Purple, Birds, and Stars: An Update

Sometimes you deliver a cake, freak out about the traffic en route, curse your GPS, get to your destination, fix afore mentioned damaged cake, and forget about it.

And then you receive gorgeous pictures like this from a client:

...and it makes it all worth while! I love the flowers around the cake and on the table! It's just gorgeous!!!

Purple, Birds, and Stars

Purple, Birds, and Stars, originally uploaded by bakers-cakes.

The name of this cake pretty well describes the pieces of this cake design puzzle! An elegant cake for a 40th birthday! This cake story really begins with an adventurous delivery to Raleigh. While, I love my GPS, I questioned it's route today! I also cursed lots when the cars in front of me stopped short behind a car turning left off of Wade Ave. Disaster was narrowly averted and the cake survived with a minimal dent. Argh.

Tokidoki Cupcakes

Tokidoki Cupcakes, originally uploaded by bakers-cakes.

I admit I'm somewhat out of touch with pop culture, so when I got a request for these Tokidoki Cupcakes, I needed a little direction! A customer ordered these for her roommate who is turning 21! To put it in terms I could understand she wrote, "They're kinda like Hello Kitty characters."

For this vanilla and strawberry fan, I whipped up some Buttermilk Vanilla Cupcakes and Strawberry Buttermilk Cupcakes and then topped them with Vanilla Buttercream and Fresh Strawberry Buttercream Frosting! The Tokidoki birds are individually hand crafted using rolled fondant and then individually colored with edible markers!

Harry Potter Cake

Harry Potter Cake, originally uploaded by bakers-cakes.

I loved making this cake! After some, well, years of protest, I finished the Harry Potter series this fall. And I'm glad I did. It was the perfect inspiration for this cake!

The cake is five layers of Baker's Cakes Signature Chocolate Cake, Vanilla Buttercream Frosting, and topped with rolled fondant. Harry's wand and glasses are sculpted out of sugar paste and the Gryffindor scarf is made out of fondant. We hope this Harry Potter fan has a magical birthday!

Girls on the Run

Last week I created a cake and cupcakes for a local Girls on the Run event:

From the Girls on the Run website:
Girls on the Run® is a non-profit prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. Our curricula address all aspects of girls' development - their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being.

Girls on the Run International (GOTRI) is the parent organization of more than 150 Girls on the Run councils across the United States and Canada. GOTRI establishes, trains and supports a network of community-level councils with local volunteers. The volunteers serve as role models to the girls through coaching the 12-week, 24 lesson curricula. The curriculum is delivered in these areas through after-school programs, recreation centers and other non-profit settings.

21st Birthday Cake!

21st Birthday Cake!, originally uploaded by bakers-cakes.

What happens when a Carolina Girl turn 21? She needs an adorable Cupcake Cake in Pink and Carolina Blue! A client ordered this cake for her sister who was celebrating her 21st Birthday! She chose a Red Velvet Cupcake Cake topped with White Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting on top of a three layer Buttermilk Vanilla Cake frosted with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting. She asked to keep the fondant minimal so the dots, sprinkles, 21, and inscription are the only fondant elements. This giant cupcakes was also accompanied by 21 Cupcakes Pops in matching Carolina Blue, shades of pink, and green!

Pirate Ship Cake

Pirate Ship Cake, originally uploaded by bakers-cakes.

Arrrr Matey! A Buttermilk Vanilla Cake with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting, topped with Light Chocolate Rolled Fondant! The details are sculpted out of Sugar Paste. This cake was actually won at a raffle at my daughter's school! The winner of this Baker's Cakes Cake got their very own custom designed cake! Within days, maybe even moments of winning this cake, I received a phone call booking this pirate cake! This cake was so much fun to make! My personal favorite detail... the pirate's tattoo! I hope this cake brings lots of joy and treasure to the Birthday Boy and his family (and no scurvy or mutiny)!

Thomas the Tank Engine Cake

Thomas the Tank Engine Cake, originally uploaded by bakers-cakes.

This cake was a blast to make! The cakes are Baker's Cakes Signature Chocolate, crumb coated with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting, and topped with rolled fondant. I loved sculpting Thomas' cheerful face out of sugar paste.

The first train car carries colorful rock candy "coal". The second train car pulls a cute sugar paste elephant, monkey, and giraffe.

The third train car carries tootsie roll and chocolate fondant logs. They are all rolling along on Oreo wheels. This is the perfect cake to accompany the celebration of the birthday of a two year old Thomas fan!

Duke Medicine Logo Cake

Duke Medicine Logo Cake, originally uploaded by bakers-cakes.

The Liver Transplant Program at Duke is celebrating it's 25th Anniversary and requested this cake. The cake is a Buttermilk Vanilla two layer sheet cake with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting. The Liver folks really wanted a liver on their cake. With some guidance we steered away from a liver topped cake, so it wouldn't end up here.

A Cake for a Cause

Cake for a Cause, originally uploaded by bakers-cakes.

This Pumpkin Cake with White Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting covered in fondant, is being donated to the Orange County Rape Crisis Center Holiday Auction! Guests attending the event will have the opportunity to bid on cakes made by local bakers. "The way the cake auction works is after dinner everyone at the table (10 people) bid for the table, so if everyone pledges $25, that tables bid would be $250 people. The highest bidding table gets first choice of cakes to eat for dessert, the 2nd highest bid gets to pick a cake for their table next, and so on." Yum! What a fantastic fantastic event for a fabulous cause!!!

Lego Bionicle Birthday Cake

Are you familiar with the saying, "the cobbler's children never have any shoes?" (Or something to that effect, I always botch up axioms). Well such was nearly the case this weekend at our house, but not with shoes, because my mother-in-law is here and she keeps my kids well shoed. My son turned seven yesterday and after a long week, I was just about caked out! But, guilt (and my husband) prodded me to finish his cake!

One of the unexpected side effects of being a cake maker, is that your children witness a seemingly endless parade of cakes march out of the kitchen. So when I asked my son what kind of cake he wanted for his birthday, he knew exactly! A Bionicle cake with so and so's mask, and he handed me a picture. Ok, not much creative wiggle room there!

I wanted to keep the fondant to a minimum, so I blended the frosting in the background to resemble the dvd cover. But to get the detail in the mask I needed to use fondant and an edible black marker. I then did thin washes of food coloring to achieve the shaded portions of the mask! And in the end, the Birthday Boy loved it! It's hard to believe my baby is seven already!
