I may have gone heavy on the vampires, but I did just read the Twilight series this summer!

 Happy Halloween!

Lego Bionicle Birthday Cake

Are you familiar with the saying, "the cobbler's children never have any shoes?" (Or something to that effect, I always botch up axioms). Well such was nearly the case this weekend at our house, but not with shoes, because my mother-in-law is here and she keeps my kids well shoed. My son turned seven yesterday and after a long week, I was just about caked out! But, guilt (and my husband) prodded me to finish his cake!

One of the unexpected side effects of being a cake maker, is that your children witness a seemingly endless parade of cakes march out of the kitchen. So when I asked my son what kind of cake he wanted for his birthday, he knew exactly! A Bionicle cake with so and so's mask, and he handed me a picture. Ok, not much creative wiggle room there!

I wanted to keep the fondant to a minimum, so I blended the frosting in the background to resemble the dvd cover. But to get the detail in the mask I needed to use fondant and an edible black marker. I then did thin washes of food coloring to achieve the shaded portions of the mask! And in the end, the Birthday Boy loved it! It's hard to believe my baby is seven already!

Look Away Pats Fans...

Despite the fact that my husband and son cringed every time they saw these Pittsburgh Steelers inspired Vanilla Buttermilk Cupcakes with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting, they were a hit with the Steelers fan who enjoyed them for his birthday!

Susie Cupcake!

It's our friend Susan's birthday, so I created the Susie Cupcake out of her favorite Peanut Butter Blossom Cookies and Chocolate Cupcakes:

Happy "29th" Birthday Susie Cupcake!!!

Carrot Cake Cupcakes!

I whipped up these Carrot Cake Cupcakes with White Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting for a Teacher Luncheon at school today:

The carrot toppers are marzipan, definitely the tastiest of all toppers! The almond flavor is a perfect compliment to the Carrot Cake Cupcakes!

Pansy Cupcakes

Pansy Cupcakes, originally uploaded by bakers-cakes.

The minute my super awesome birthday present arrived at my door, I knew I had to make something immediately! I pulled out Martha Stewart's Cupcake book (which, incidentally I thought that I MUST have, bought several months ago, and just now, finally, for the first time used) and flipped through it, while my assistant offered her opinion. We should make Pink Cupcakes, she determined. I'm sure she has only been slightly influenced by the fact that she's now listened to and read Pinkalicious about 49 times since last Thursday. At any rate, we flipped through the book and she forcefully suggested we make the Pansy Cupcakes. (And since she did suggest that I look like Angelina Jolie the other day, who was I to argue with her?) After a batch of botched blobby flowers, I scraped some pansy pansies off the cupcakes and endeavored to try again.

Why do they always look better on the test tries on parchment? In the end, even though I made 1/3 of Martha's recipe (a sure recipe for disaster), in my new much much bigger, more powerful mixer, ironic even to me, the Vanilla Buttermilk Cupcakes tasted pretty delicious!

Fall is Here!

It's October! In North Carolina that means one thing: Summer is almost over!

We'll undoubtably endure a couple more 90' days, but today is cool and damp! So in honor of fall, an Apple Crumb Pie!
