Lego Bionicle Birthday Cake

Are you familiar with the saying, "the cobbler's children never have any shoes?" (Or something to that effect, I always botch up axioms). Well such was nearly the case this weekend at our house, but not with shoes, because my mother-in-law is here and she keeps my kids well shoed. My son turned seven yesterday and after a long week, I was just about caked out! But, guilt (and my husband) prodded me to finish his cake!

One of the unexpected side effects of being a cake maker, is that your children witness a seemingly endless parade of cakes march out of the kitchen. So when I asked my son what kind of cake he wanted for his birthday, he knew exactly! A Bionicle cake with so and so's mask, and he handed me a picture. Ok, not much creative wiggle room there!

I wanted to keep the fondant to a minimum, so I blended the frosting in the background to resemble the dvd cover. But to get the detail in the mask I needed to use fondant and an edible black marker. I then did thin washes of food coloring to achieve the shaded portions of the mask! And in the end, the Birthday Boy loved it! It's hard to believe my baby is seven already!
